Scholarship and Award Announcements

Maria Mitchell Women in Science Award -- The Maria Mitchell Association (MMA) offers an annual award of $5,000 to recognize an individual whose efforts have encouraged the advancement of girls and women in the natural and physical sciences, mathematics, engineering, computer science, and technology.

The AWIS Scholarship Program -- The San Diego Chapter of the Associate for Women in Science (AWIS) will award $9,000 of scholarship funds in 2006 to reward and encourage aspiring female scientists. In addition to a monetary award, scholarship recipients will receive a complementary one-year AWIS membership and will be honored at the 2007 Scholarship Gala.

The Association for Women in Science (AWIS) offers pre-doctoral awards and college scholarships for high school seniors in the amount of $1000. A new program, the Kirsten R. Lorentzen Award, is for college sophomores and juniors studying physics or geoscience. Information about these awards and scholarships can be found here. Several of the awards, given annually or every other year, are named to honor the achievements of women scientists. Please direct questions to , president of the Educational Foundation.

The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) offers several different scholarships and awards.

Blewett Scholarship for Women in Physics -- The American Physical Society (APS) is once again offering the M. Hildred Blewett Scholarship for Women in Physics. This unique scholarship has been established to enable women to return to physics research after having had to interrupt those careers for family reasons. Please contact for more information.

The GE & Science Prize for Young Life Scientists -- GE Healthcare, formerly Amersham Biosciences, and Science/AAAS have joined forces in creating the GE & Science Prize for Young Life Scientists. Since 1995, the aim of the prize has been to recognize outstanding Ph.D. graduate students from around the world and reward their research in the field of molecular biology. Both Science/AAAS and GE Healthcare believe that support of promising scientists at the beginning of their careers is critical for continued scientific progress. Each year, the grand prize winner receives a prize of US$25,000, while runners-up receive prizes of US$5,000. The staffs of both GE Healthcare and Science/AAAS salute the efforts of past winners and look forward to research findings from future entrants. Please visit the link above for more information.

Resources for Young Scientists

Girl Talk -- GirlTalk is a mentoring initiative that encourages girls to explore science, math, engineering and technology - in their own words. Making their debuts as radio hosts, girls ages 11-16 interviewed amazing women - from CIA agents to restoration ecologists - and asked the questions they wanted to know about what being a real scientist is all about!

Engineer your life -- Engineer your life is a website aimed to help high school aged women gain information on pursuing engineering as a career. Includes information on preparing and applying for college, how to test out if engineering interests you, scholarships and financial aid, and much more!

Wish-net - Women in Science and Healthcare Network (WISH-net) seeks to inspire, mentor, and connect girls and women of all ages in the sciences and/or healthcare. Throughout the site, WISH-net provides mentoring resources aimed at stimulating and sustaining interest in scientific careers for school-age girls, encouraging women who are pursuing careers in science, and supporting the commitment of women who are already working in the sciences.

Girl Power -- A website targeted to young girls to promote their interest in science, positive self image, and learning.

The Science and Everyday Experiences Initiative -- SEE is an informal science education project and their website contains a Kids' Corner filled with websites that show how math and science can be fun.

Engineer Girl! -- Engineer Girl! tries to bring national attention to the opportunity that engineering represents to all people at any age, but particularly to women and girls.

EurekAlert! -- EurekAlert! maintains a portal devoted to science reporting especially for young students.

Expanding Your Horizons -- EYH promotes conferences that are designed to nurture girls' interest in science and math courses and to encourage them to consider science and math-based career options such as engineering, computer science, and physical science.

Girls Go Tech -- This website encourages girls to explore the math, science, and technology that is all around them.

Sally Ride Science -- This organization, founded by former astronaut and first American woman in space Sally Ride, empowers girls to explore the world of science through their innovative programs and award-winning science publications.

BEWiSE -- San Diego Science Alliance's (SDSA's) Better Education for Women in Science and Engineering program invites girls in grades 7 and 8 to Science Overnights to explore their interest in science, hosts events for BE WiSE alumnae in high school to encourage their selection of more courses in science and math, and exposes these girls to adult women scientists who share their knowledge and passion and experiences with science and engineering careers.

Science News for Kids -- Science News for Kids is a new website devoted to science news for children of ages 9 to 13. The goal is to offer timely items of interest to kids, accompanied by suggestions for hands-on activities, books, articles, web resources, and other useful materials.

TryScience.org -- TryScience.org is a gateway for young girls to experience the excitement of contemporary science and technology through on and offline interactivity with science and technology centers worldwide.

Biomedical Beat -- A monthly digest of research news from The National Institute of General Medical Science.

BrainCake -- Website directed towards encouraging young girls in the sciences. Contains a vast resource of Mentoring/Science groups (Pennsylvania based), opportunity to meet mentors, and scholarship opportunities.

GirlStart -- Non-profit organization based in Austin, Texas which offers afterschool and summer camp programs to empower middle-school age girls in math, science, and technology.

KPBS Kids and Family:Science -- Science section of KPBS website. Contains many links for young girls interested in science, statistics for women in science, and many other resources.

Binary Girl -- The goal of BinaryGirl.com is to share knowledge with those interested in learning more about technology through an interactive community of women. The site contains a job section, cyber jargon dictionary, tech resources, message board, and much more.

National Institutes of Health Office of Science Education -- The NIH OSE coordinates science education activities at the NIH and develops and sponsors science education projects in house. These programs serve elementary, secondary, and college students and teacher and the public.

Speakers Bureau -- The Speakers Bureau provides a list of NIH researchers, clinicians, and other professionals who are available to speak to school groups on topics such as gene therapy, alcohol and drug abuse, AIDS, and much more.

Science NetLinks -- Science NetLinks provides a wealth of resources for K-12 science educators and is a guide to meaningful standards-based internet experiences for students.

Mad Science -- Science enrichment provider available to a wide area across the country to bring live science programs to school children.
