Created as a response to former Harvard President Lawrence Summers' now infamous suggestion that women are less represented than men in the sciences because of innate gender differences, Truth Valuse is a true-life tale that offers a humorous, scathing, insightful and ultimately uplifting look at the challenges of being a professional woman in a male-dominated field. Friday, June 4, 2010, at 2-3pm, --- The Role of UCSD in 'Lessons Learned' in a Life of Learning. Dr. LaVerne E. Ragster is a conservationist, research scientist, and past university president who has not only transformed the Caribbean region, but has earned national and worldwide respect from leading climate change scientists and environmental leaders. She graduated from UC San Diego in 1980 with a Ph.D. in Biology/Plant Biochemistry, and is returning to campus to accept this year's Professional Achievement Award from the UCSD Alumni Association. Tuesday, October 7, 2008, -- Informal discussion with Dr. Ben Barres concerning the issues women face in science. Dr. Barres is both a distinguished neuroscientist and a very influential advocate of women and minorities in science and has a unique perspective as a transgendered person. In 2006, Dr. Barres published an article in Nature, titled, "Does Gender Matter?." Early 2008, Dr. Barres gave a lecture at Harvard titled, "Some Reflections on the Dearth of Women and Science."
